About Emily

As defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary:

ROOT- (n) the basic cause, origin, source of something

FERNWEH- (n) the crave for travel, being homesick for a place you’ve never been

This is a blog that documents my personal reconciliation between these two facets of my personality, and I believe life in general. We travel to discover and experience the uncommon, and often it leaves us more appreciative of what we have left behind. In the spring of 2014, I left my hometown of Boulder, CO to serve on the island of Java, Indonesia with the Peace Corps for the next 27 months. This is a  record of my rooted self encountering experiences of fernweh.

  1. Emily ~ I wish you great luck and good health as you begin this amazing journey. You will probably learn more about yourself than anything else in these next 27 months. I am proud of your determination as well as your willingness to give so freely of yourself. Look out, people of Java, Indonesia … your lives are about to change for the better! Take good care of yourself & know that you will be in our thoughts and in our hearts. With fond regards, Laurie Parker (Brad’s mom) 🙂
